C33 - throttle and window replacement
« on: 30 July, 2014, 03:43:14 »
Hello!  I am writing from Miami, Florida :) I own Hull No. 74 - C33.   I am a "newbie" to CYOC and excited to be able to share my passion for Contest Yachts with members on this forum.  I would appreciate any comments on replacing the throttle in the aft cockpit with original part or very similar part and also comments on replacing the port windows and port hatches with quality offshore windows.  If anyone has done these changes please share information and include where the parts where purchased.   Thank you.

Are you really sure you want the original throttle because that thing was in my opinion a piece of crap. What engine and clutch is in your boat at the moment? And are you using an single or dual lever throttle?

Volvo MD-11-25HP.  It's a double throttle. The original was replaced with a flimsy one but the old one seems to be better built.  I would consider replacing with any recommendations from contest owners. I want something strong and resilient that can take a beating but smooth operation at the throttle.  Thx!!

The MD11 has a MS clutch if I am correct? And are you only looking for a replacement for the throttle or do you need a complete neew two lever system like   this ?

BTW, I will move this question to the Technical section of the forum, I guess it's more appropriate there  ;)

I have C33 hull #94 on Florida Gulf coast. I have removed and resealed all portlights , hatches and portholes and are now 100% watertight. The hatches I replaced lenses with a heavy tinted cast acrylic and used correct special silicone for bedding. The portlights were removed by lubricating for more than a month in advance with many applications of PB Blaster penetrating oil and the screws removed with impact driver using new, quality bit. 5 of the screws snapped off but only the heads and studs were easily removed with vise grips. Butyl tape was used to re-bed. No leaks. It should be waterproof for another 40 years.

That's really useful, I have just purchased a C33 number 37 based on the East Coast of the UK, one of the jobs on the list is to remove, clean and rebed all the port lights before I start remodelling the interior.
