Stanchion bases access on 1983 Contest 31HT/aft cabin
« on: 03 August, 2021, 19:39:05 »
Hello,

Does anyone know how to access the underside of the bases of the stanchions on this model of Contest 31. The bedding for our stanchion bases is dissolving after almost 40 years. The interior "headliner" of our boat is all fiberglass and so far we have been unable to find any access to the underside of the bases so that we can unbolt them and put new bedding on the deck.  Does this mean that the backing plate and nuts are glassed in so that we can simply remove the bolts from the exterior in order to put new bedding compound below the bases.

Thank you from Canada for any tips!

Nancy

Hi Nancy, as far as I know you can just unbolt the stanchins and there are no backing plates. If you want to be sure I suggest you contact Mr. Dick Zaal, https://www.dickzaalyachtdesign.nl/contact/  since he designed ths model.

Hi Nancy,
please look at this post:
Contest Yacht Owners Club Forum »Techniek - Technical »Onderhoud - Maintenance »lekkage bij sceptervoet Contest 29
I think it is similar at the Contest 31.
Conyplex glassed in all the stanchions from inside.
