Hull construction Contest 42 1980

Dear All
I am considering a 1980 Contest 42 from 1980. I am a little concerned about the balsa cored hull and water ingress. Has anyone found trouble in their hulls, and if so what dud you do to fix the problem? The areas of concern are through hull fittings, and when replacing these has anyone found problems with wet core, and what was done to fix this, or if no problems found what did you do to ensure the through hull remained water tight? Hi Simon,

Our boat is a 1982 Contest 35/37.
We replaced the thru hull fittings and seacocks twice (2002 and 2012).
We have found no problems wit water that was ingessed.
Just fit the new fittings with al lot of Sikaflex 221. Before fitting just first put the Sikaflles on the inside of te hole with your fingers. Use more then enoug Sika! Let it dry first for a few hours and the fit the hull fiitings with agian a lot of Sikaflex. Turn the fitting around till it is not really tight and wait one ore day to tighten it. Then the Sikaflex will not get out anymore but had made a consistant seal. After a few days you can remove the Sikaflex around the fitting with a small Stanley knive.

Hi Simon,
Agree with paperino response regarding the new skin fittings and seacocks installation - this is very important in order to prevent leaks around into the core.

If, after removal of the skin fittings you notice a wet core, remove as much as possible of the wet balsa core from around the hole and check with moisture meter if you can.
- let it dry for as long as you can while the holes are open. You can use a hot air blower to speed the drying - or better shop-vac to suck any moisture you can. But again, you may want to wait for weeks or more, depending on how much moisture has been found. In severe cases you may need to drill holes through the external fiberglass layer to verify and vacuum more water if found...

After everything is perfectly dry, you should inject around the skin holes in between the fiberglass layers a thickened epoxy and fill it in completely, just leave the original round hole. Let it dry as necessary and proceed with the skin fittings installation as suggested here.
