Contest 33 Owners advice please..... and photos
« on: 30 August, 2014, 21:20:42 »
Hi again...I am now an owner of a Contest 33 from 1972.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

As you can see she has been unloved for some time, not sure where to start but guess it will be with a large clean up operation!

She is fitted with a Volvo Penta 2003 condition unknown at this point, it really is a bit of a gamble buying her but just love the lines.

I have included some photos which hopefully you can see, I am guessing the engine will have to be removed for overhaul or replacement, hull, topsides, deck will need cleaning/sanding polishing etc, check shaft, sea cocks replacing, new running and standing rigging......that's just to start.

I have purchased as a project so know it will be a hard slog, but isn't that half the fun ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

So if there are any 33 owners who may be able to offer help or advice please feel free.

First start cleaning her with a high pressure hose, I guess that will make al lot of difference allready  ;)  At the same time you can check if all the hatches and windows are still watertight. About the engine, it might be a good idea to try and get e mechanic on site to verify the condition and replace oil and filters. The VP2003 at itself is a simple and durable engine so if you don't have to remove it that will save you a bunch off work  :)

Thanks BJ, am trying to organise getting her moved by road to a little nearer as a 2hr drive each way I think will get akward, so will have the mast stepped at the yard and hopefully it will be easier to travel to.

One more question, are the hull and superstructure painted or do they still have the original gelcoat?

Nice looking boat, and I would guess by the photo's original gelcoat.

Also having just replaced an aged Volvo MD2B in my Contest 31 BJ is spot on about saving a bunch of work if you don't need to to that!

Where will you be keeping her in the UK (I am in Portsmouth Harbour)?

Guys, I believe it is original gelcoat which will need some serious cutting back!
Planning to move her to the Medway area to work on so I can reach it within 30 mins by road, not sure where she will be moored once in a sea worthy condition.

I would say start cleaning with water and soap to see how she appears from under the layer of dirt. After that try sanding the gelcoat with a P600 or P800 to see if you like the results. It will be a lot of work but the gelcoat used by Contest back in those years was pretty heavy duty so it should be possible to restore it. I've seen the same with the C33 that I used to have.
