Advice/thoughts on the Contest 31HT
« on: 15 February, 2006, 23:10:36 »
Hi all

I'm am very much a 'newbie' to this forum and unfortunately don't speak or read Dutch (I'm hoping that some of you may speak English).

We've been looking at a 1973 Contest 31HT as a possibility for cruising off the Scottish coast and in due course over to northern mainland Europe.  Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on this boat, and is there anything we ought particularly to be looking out for?

Thanks in advance/anticipation

David

Hi David,

First of all welcome to this forum and I think you willl some English-speaking people over here. In my opinion the 31 HT is a good boat for the purposes that you mention. I'm not aware of any boat-specific problems or flaws but there are of course the regular points of attention such as the sails and the engine. You may contact Mr. Dick Zaal, since he designed this boat, through his website or by a-mail. On the links-page you can find the url of Dick Zaal Yachtdesing (at least, it should be there imo  ;) ).
If you stilll have any doubts: ask the help of an expert to do a survey of the boat. May cost a bit but it's worth it.

Cheers,
BJ

Thanks for your advice BJ; we will of course get a proper survey carried before we go ahead.

Good luck with the purchase of your Contest. I also found that there are two different models Contest 31 form 1973, one desigend by Uus van Essen and one designed by Dick Zaal. More info on http://www.joshua-contestyacht.nl/html/type_yachten.html

Cheers,
BJ
