my boat makes some noise while sailing
« on: 19 July, 2010, 17:09:45 »
Hello Forum,

probably a ridiculous question, but after buying the boat and 1 1/2 year of a hard refit job I sailed my "new" boat last week for first time an I never had these occurences with my (smaller) boats before: While sailing the boat (36K from 1976) the complete hull makes some noise like groaning wood. Is this normal or is it a mark of a weak hull?
Maybe this is a normal symptom and belongs to a 34 year old boat (technology; construction methode?)
What are your obsevations concerning these topic?

Thanks a lot!

Perhaps a stupid reply but when you are under sail do you have your gearbox of you inboard engine in reverse (engine off) if not the with the gear in neutral the propeller starts turning and the shaft will turn also resulting in resonnance of the boat.

Hello,

I think the internal structure (especially the main bulkhead) is "working" somehow...
I couldnt see (or feel) any movement, but there were some cracking noise everytime when the hull
was going thru a wave especially when sailing clause-hauled.

In the meantime I heared from other owners that this symptom occures with older boats because the structures in the hull are laminated directly to the hull (direct connection of plywood to grp; no foam layer between) so some noise is programmed somehow.

I will further examine this symptom and I am curios for some experiences from other members of the forum.

Could be the main bulkhead, that sometimes occures on older boats. There is a topic on the forum somewhere (in Dutch) on 'krakend schot', i'll try to find it because there were some suggestions to fix it. It is however possible to fix the bulkhead and reduce the noise.

Well, try this one: http://forum.cyoc.nl/index.php/topic,465.0.html

The solution mentioned in this topic is to fix the bulkhead to the hull with PU kit such as Sikaflex.

Thanks a lot BJ.
Calming to read that not only my boat has this symptoms.
I will investigate and report later.

Thanks BJ, with the exception of some specific words the text was absolut understandable for me.

I am sailing on the Ijsselmeer, Markermeer and Waddensee since 6 years. For next year I am planning to make a trip trogh the channel to the UK.
My Contest is berthed now in Lelystad / Noordersluis.
